The Kratom, scientifically known by its Latin name Mitragyna, is a moderately tall tree, from 4 to 15 meters, from the same family as the coffee plant. Kratom trees grow in tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia, mainly in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Although it is mostly known by a small number of biologists and botanists in the western world since the 1800s, the exposure of kratom to the rest of the world has come quite recently. In the last decade, however, a growing number of researchers and amateurs have had access to this amazing plant, and as a result, our knowledge of it has increased to a great extent. It is now when the rest of the world is beginning to learn what has been known in Asia for centuries: the kratom is a truly unique plant in the world. The Kratom is a tree, but when people speak of kratom, it usually refers to the leaves of it. These dark green leaves, whose dimensions are approximately 17 cm long and 10 cm wide, are continually detached from the tree throughout the year. These leaves have been part of the culture of Thailand and Malaysia for hundreds of years, or even more. The omnipresence of kratom in Thai culture is such that in some regions it has been estimated that 70% of the population uses this plant daily. Numerous Thai workers and farmers chew fresh kratom leaves to improve their productivity, work longer and harder while maintaining a positive mentality. Traditional Thai medicine has prescribed kratom for decades as a remedy for gastrointestinal distress, diarrhoea and congestion. As early as 1897, the kratom was proposed as a possible substitute for opium.
Thai kratom users generally prefer to chew fresh kratom leaves, although they also consume kratom powder. In Malaysia, where kratom is also known by the name of Ketum, kratom is boiled with water and a tea is made which is then cooled and then sold in street stalls. The effects of kratom are very peculiar and in some sense, contradictory depending on the amount of kratom consumed. In small amounts, the kratom has a stimulating or euphoric effect, and in larger amounts, the effect is sedative similar to an opioid. It has been discovered that the Kratom contains more than 25 different chemical substances (called alkaloids) that are responsible for these effects. Of these alkaloids, it is believed that mitragynine contributes to the stimulating effects of kratom while 7-hydroxyvitamin is the main alkaloid responsible for the sedative effects. As with most plants, however, it is believed that all alkaloids in the plant contribute in some way.
The Kratom has been used in Thailand as a medicinal plant for centuries; long before it was banned by the Thai government due to political and economic influence vendors opium were threatened by the growing popularity of kratom in the early sixteenth century. Another factor that influenced the wrong ban on kratom was the disclosure of false information by the population that did not really know what Kratom was capable of and its security. Also, due to users of kratom as recreational “drug” who consider kratom as a legal equivalent of marijuana and other similar products.
Because of this, many scientists and experts began to abandon their research on the potential of this plant, probably because their laboratory or place of work was affected by laws that restricted their use and possession. However, in some territories where kratom is still legal, certain scientists and researchers began to study the possible beneficial effects of kratom for humans.
There are users who mainly buy kratom extracts like red elephant kratom or capsules to increase their ability to perform long or especially hard tasks more easily.
